Das neue Notebook der Firma Inventec, das exklusiv mit Chrome OS ausgestattet wurde, hört auf den Namen CR-48. Der auf den ersten Blick kryptisch wirkende Name leitet sich von der Bezeichnung des chemischen Elements Chromium ab – sehr passend. Noch passender ist wohl aber der landläufige Name »Google Chromebook«. Nun haben die ersten 65.000 Geräte überwiegend professionelle Tester in den USA erreicht. Die Eindrücke der Tester sind gemischt, doch in Einem sind sich alle einig: Es gibt noch viel zu tun.
Das Netbook wird einem Atom N455-Prozessor mit 1,66 GHz betrieben, hat ein 12″ Format und bringt eine Bildschirmauflösung von 1366 x 768 Pixel bei einer Gehäusegröße von 30 x 22,5 x 2,3 cm. Ein USB-Port, einen SD-Kartenslot, Webcam, eine kombinierte Mikrofon/Audiobuchse und einen VGA-Ausgang – mehr Kontakt nach außen braucht es nicht. Die Netzwerkanbindung erfolgt über Wi-Fi 802.11 Dual-Band sowie 3G/UMTS. In den Energiespar-Modus wechselt das Gerät durch Schliessen des Deckels, das Aufwachen wiederum soll innerhalb einer Sekunde funktionieren, wobei 8 Stunden Dauerbetrieb und 8 Tage Standby erreicht werden können sollen. Das Gerät soll unbestätigten Gerüchten zufolge außerdem einen 16 GB Flash-Chip beinhalten, der für weitere Performance sorgt.
Chrome OS ist in Version 0.9.128.8 vorinstalliert, die Version des Chrome-Browsers ist 8.0.552.341. Die Bedienung unterscheidet sich in weiten Teilen von der eines gängigen Windows-System. Das Inventec-Netbook ist ausschließlich auf Googles Services und das Cloud-Computing ausgelegt: Ohne Anmeldung bei GoogleMail, GoogleDocs oder einem der anderen, von Google betriebenen Diensten ist man schlichtweg aufgeschmissen. Einen Dateimanager gibt es nicht, Google sieht einen Zugriff auf das darunterliegende Linux-System nicht vor, und selbst das Drucken läuft über Cloud-Print. Ein Kaltstart dauert ca. 15 Sekunden – ein beeindruckender Wert. Beeindruckt zeigten sich die Tester überdies davon, wie schnell Chrome-OS eingerichtet ist: Einfach das eigene Google-Passwort eintippen – fertig. Weitere Konfigurationsschritte gibt es nicht, da die Oberfläche vollständig aus dem Browser-Interface von Google Chrome besteht. Daten werden vom Desktop ins Netz automatisch synchronisiert, sodass man ohne Zeitverzögerung seine gewohnte Arbeitsumgebung vorfindet.
Chrome OS macht die Hardware unwichtig, verlagert das Leben am Computer ins Netz. Da das System vollständig verschlüsselt sei, so Google, sei auch der Verlust eines Laptops nur mit dem Materialwert gegen zu rechnen. Mitarbeiter könnten umgehend und ohne Datenverlust mit einem neuen Gerät weiterarbeiten. Wer sich mit solch neuen Bedienkonzepten anfreunden kann, findet in dem CR-48 ein Gerät, das deutlich über das bisherige Verständnis eines Notebooks hinausgeht, das sich eher an ein Konzept des iPad anlehnt. Wozu zig Anschlüsse und teure Kabel, wenn das Verteilen der Informationen über die Cloud quasi »on the flow« zu bewerkstelligen ist? Wer sich allerdings dagegen sträubt, seine Informationen Google quasi in einem Schub zur Verfügung zu stellen, der sollte etwas vorsichtiger sein.
Als allgemeines Credo gibt es prinzipielles Lob für das neue Gerät, das sicherlich niemals in dieser Form auf den Markt kommen wird – und für Googles Versuch, ein vollständig auf die Web-Nutzung konzentriertes Betriebssystem zu entwickeln. Die wirkliche Alltagstauglichkeit muss sich aber tatsächlich erst mit der Zeit beweisen. Nimmt man nun das oben bereits zitierte iPad mit in die Zukunftsprognose, dem mit fehlenden USB-Anschlüssen und dem Konzept der steten Synchronisierung auch in Teilen ein früher Tod prognostiziert wurde, so darf Google wirklich hoffen, den großen Wurf zu landen.
